Remote Work Cafe Etiquette: The Unwritten Rules

Cafe-Nomad Team·

Working from cafes is a privilege, not a right. The best cafe workers are the ones who respect the space, support the business, and leave the cafe better than they found it. Here are the unwritten rules every remote cafe worker should follow.

Buy regularly, not just once

The number one rule: a cafe is a business, not a free coworking space. If you're staying for 2-3 hours, buy at least two items. A coffee and a pastry is a fair exchange for the electricity, WiFi, and real estate you're using. If the cafe is small and busy, consider limiting your stay to 1-2 hours during peak times.

Be mindful of space and noise

Don't spread across a 4-person table if you're working solo. Keep phone calls short or take them outside. Use headphones for all audio. If the cafe is filling up with regular customers, be ready to pack up or move to the counter. And never rearrange furniture to create your own 'office' — use the seating as it's set up.

Respect outlet access

If the cafe has limited outlets, don't hog them once your laptop is fully charged. Bring a compact power strip if you need multiple devices charged, but only if the cafe has space for it. And never unplug someone else's device without asking.

Be part of the community

The best cafe regulars become part of the community. Learn the barista's name, try different menu items, leave positive reviews, and recommend the cafe to other remote workers. When you find a great work cafe, help keep it great by being a model customer. Rate it on Cafe-Nomad so other nomads can find it too.
